Maths Week at Osmani!

To celebrate Maths Week, Osmani held a number of different challenges. These challenges ranged from a maths rap/poetry competition to a maths building family/class challenge.

Fantastic prizes were up for grabs.

It was wonderful to see the whole school take part in the event and there were lots of structures made by classes ranging from domes, a structure of Canary Wharf, to structures of sofa beds and table and chairs.

The children really enjoyed making their structures and were keen to tell the school about them.

There were many winners across the challenges but our overall winner constructed an amazing clock using paper and cardboard with her family and wrote some amazing maths poems. Well done winner!

We finished the event by singing birthday celebrations to the Queen, who had turned 91.

Take a look at the photos below to see a small snapshot of the event.

Jacqueline Wilson Competition winners meet the author

Osmani Primary School had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take 30 children to see Dame Jacqueline Wilson on World Book Day, 2nd March 2017 at York Hall, Old Ford Road. A competition was run in school to select the 30 children to go on the trip. The children were asked to submit book reviews of Jacqueline Wilson titles. Over a thousand children were at York Hall for her one hour talk and question and answer session. The children had a wonderful time and were very enthusiastic about listening to such a popular and well known children’s author. Afterwards two of our children were selected to have the opportunity to talk Dame Jacqueline and get their books signed.

Author visit in Nursery and Reception

Nursery and Reception children recently met author and storyteller Margaret Bateson Hill. Margaret was telling stories to the children and talked to them about writing books, making reference to her own books which include Lao Lao of Dragon Mountain and retellings of traditional rhymes. The children really enjoyed the visit and could not wait to read more of Margaret’s stories in the classrooms with their teachers.

On Friday 31st March 2017, we held a Book Character Day at Osmani to celebrate reading and our favourite books. The school turned into a magical place full of fantastic book characters! It was wonderful to see the children and adults dressed up and we were pleased that so many parents came to support the occasion. The children competed against the teachers in the annual book quiz and the best costumes won certificates and amazing books. We also raised money for a good cause – what a great way to end the spring term!

Year 5 Mosaic Graduation!

Girls in Year 5 celebrated the end of their Mosaic project by participating in a graduation ceremony that took place in a venue near London Bridge. Each of the girls were encouraged to prepare a speech for the ceremony about what they had learnt from their Mosaic workshops. All the girls really valued and appreciated special one to one time with mentors to help develop their confidence and wider ambitions.

Year 5 Science Ambassadors

A group of 8 Year 5 children were chosen to visit Swanlea Secondary School for a day of fun filled Science activities. They participated in a variety of different experiments and were given bags full of resources to bring back to school and be expert learners in class. The expert learners then worked together with small groups to carry out the experiments and teach their classmates all they had learnt. As you can see both expert learners and new learners had lots of fun taking part in the practical experiments!
