Year 3 have been enjoying our topic Active Planet. To enrich our learning on this topic we took part in educational visits to the Soanes Centre and the Natural History Museum.

For our visit to the Soanes Centre we took part in a workshop called ‘Rocks, Soils and Weathering’.

We took part in a sorting activity where we had to think carefully about the different uses for rocks in our everyday life. After we took part in an experiment where we sorted rocks according to whether they were hard or soft, permeable or in-permeable.

On our visit to the Natural History Museum we got to see and sketch the fossil that Mary Anning found. How amazing! We were also able to visit the volcanoes and earthquakes gallery which allowed us to gain extra knowledge and information for our reports which we will be writing over the next couple of weeks!

We have really been enjoying this topic!

Chatterbooks Celebration!

On Tuesday, 5 children from Year 3 who have been involved in the Chatterbooks reading group and their parents were invited to attend a celebration of the project at the Free Word Centre in Farringdon. We all had a wonderful time showing our scrapbooks to visitors and telling them all about our Chatterbooks club. We met authors Steve Cole and Ali Sparkes and the children were given signed books by them and had their photos taken with them. We all had an amazing time!

Our trip to the Science Museum!

On Friday 5th February year 3 Orange and year 3 Gold went to visit the Science Museum. We took part in an amazing workshop about forces, which tied in perfectly with our Science topic. We were given a chance to discuss what makes bridges strong and we were shown how to make structures stronger by adding support. We were also shown how strong egg shells actually are, we were all amazed by how much weight egg shells can hold before cracking!

Tate Modern

Year 3 Orange went to the Tate Modern to attend an art workshop! We got a guided tour around the gallery and had a chance to look at all of the amazing pieces of art. The workshops were fantastic! Some of us got to use different materials and create our own sculptures while the others created sculptures using clay. We all really enjoyed the day.

Volcanoes!

This half term we have been learning about volcanoes as part of our ‘Active Planet’ topic. We have already found out a lot of interesting facts about volcanoes, but the learning doesn’t stop there. Next week we will be making our own volcanoes and even making them erupt, which should be great fun!

To deepen our understanding of volcanoes we will be heading down to the Natural History museum on 16th October, watch this space for pictures of our trip!
