Science Investigation

In Year 5 this half term we have been participating in a number of investigations to find the properties of different materials. In this particular experiment we were trying to find the best material to create an umbrella. We had to make sure the material was strong, flexible, durable and most importantly - waterproof! To check the strength of the different materials we placed weights on top of the materials until they collapsed. One person in the group had to record how many weights were being used to ensure the results were accurate. In the end we discovered that although the fabric was the strongest material it wasn't necessarily the best for an umbrella. We decided that the polythene (plastic) was the best material to make our umbrellas out of. Click here to view the photos.
