Geologists on a Rock hunt!

Year 3 Orange and Gold class visited the Soanes Centre to investigate different types of rocks and the effect of weathering, as our topic this term is Active Planet.

In the centre, we observed and classified rocks according to their characteristics. Our investigations involved making predictions, using equipment (such as magnifying glasses and pipettes) and then observing and testing different types of rocks (both man-made and natural ) within the surroundings of the centre.

  

Some of the rocks that we identified were: granite, limestone, sandstone, marble and slate. We then investigated different properties of rocks such as: permeability, impermeability and whether they were hard or soft, and the effect of weathering and erosion. Did you know that granite is an igneous rock that is extremely hard wearing and will take many decades to erode?
As a result of our trip we are now budding geologists and can not wait to learn more about fossils and rocks from around the world!
